Recently I moved into my mother’s home to help take care of her and my special needs sister. While finding room for some of my favorite household items I came across a cupboard filled with coffee mugs, tumblers and of all things a cup of pens. My dad was a salesman before he passed away and to my amazement, most of the pens in that cup belonged to businesses he called on. My father taught me a lot about business, but the one thing that stuck was that you should make great contacts and stay loyal to them.
You wouldn’t think a little thing like an ink pen would muster up a flood of emotions but when it comes to remembering how my dad could sell just about anything that cup of pens kept me smiling all day long.
There are many different ways to market your business effectively, but the one my team and I are most passionate about is promotional products.
You’ve heard the phrase “you have to spend money to make money” but how should you be spending your advertising dollars? Just like that cup of pens stored in the cupboard for 20 years promotional products have great staying power and are some of the oldest forms of advertising.
“Pine Press is my one stop shop for all of my advertising, printing and promotional needs. The staff is always helpful, friendly and meets all my exceptions in a timely manner.”

Here are a few ways you can use promotional products to promote your business:
- Give and you shall receive – We all like to get something for free even pens and coffee cups put a smile on someone’s face and will make them more likely to do business with you.
- Make your trade-table standout! – Beyond the normal tradeshow products be creative in what you give-a-way. Go the extra mile in providing products that can both be useful and eye-catching at the same time. Instead of waiting for them to come to you send out your promoters to work the crowd. Hand out unique products that will make people stop and ask…”Where did you get that?”
- Repeat, repeat, repeat – Your logo and brand requires repeated exposure to be seen and remembered through the thousands of marketing messages your clients see each month. Recognizing the same colors, slogan and brand over and over again are one of the best ways to increase your brand Promotional products purchased in bulk and sprinkled throughout your community is one of the best ways to make sure your brand stays in front of your competitors.
One thing to remember is normal advertising runs for a set period; whereas promotional products will continue to advertise your business for years to come.
I had such fun going through that cup of pens. Most of the businesses in that cup are still in operation today and many of them we still patronize.
